Yin/Yang Communication Techniques

The model of Yin/Yang Communication Techniques illustrates that an effective conversation needs a balance between active and passive contributions. Yin represents the passive, observing part. You work with the suggestions, ideas, wishes and needs of your vis-à-vis. Yang stands for the active part, for expressive contributions, your own suggestions, wishes, interests and ideas.

This can also be observed in the various martial arts like Kung Fu, Tai Chi or Aikido. If someone attacks you, protect yourself and use the energy of your opponent for your own purpose.

Many of us think of being active when we think of leadership. We would say something to convince our vis-à-vis or even find powerful arguments that our vis-à-vis can’t resist. In a duel between two politicians in front of an audience, this might be eligible. For a lateral leader, going about a conversation this way might lead to a “win the argument, but lose the relationship”-case. If you listen to your vis-à-vis, allow room for him/her and build on what was said before, leads as well.

In this course you will learn:

  • Why in a conversation both sides (active & passive) are equally important
  • Make use of opposite’s arguments for own purpose
  • Apply specific active and passive communication techniques
